About Fenigo and Me
Who am I?
This site is part of my evolution. My name is Jana. I first came across very basic web design in one my jobs. This was a high tech company that had just experienced severe layoffs after the big boom. I was the first hire since the end of the glorious times. In the beginning I hated my new position, but I had to make it work and I did it. And even more – I learned to love it. Since my job required getting free write-ups about the products that the company manufactured I got to surf the Net all day long looking for leads. I went through lots of websites, contacted many magazines and wrote numerous press releases. While I was in PR I also became something like a "webmaster." I learned to read the code and manipulate it. My mathematical mind found it exciting!
Where do I come from?
I grew up in Latvia, which was part of the Soviet Union until 1991. Latvia is a very beautiful country, but in many ways it was a very different world from Canada. We never went hungry, even though sometimes the only food on our dinner table was delicious rye bread topped with ketchup and sour cream. My life back in Latvia contributed to me becoming very resourceful. I knew that there always was a way if you looked hard enough. I feel very fortunate to have grown up in Latvia. The experience has given me survival skills and appreciation for all the opportunities available in Canada.
How did I get into the online world?
After my son was born I decided to stay home with him. One day I read about a woman in our local Kitchener newspaper who complained that she could not afford to put her 4-year old son in kids’ programs. I was shocked because I knew that many free programs that I had attended with my son are available in our city. I realized that some people just cannot find them as easily. I decided to build an online parent guide - www.kwkids.com. I had a vision of what I wanted this online guide to look like and realized that basic html won't cut it. So, I found a great book and started learning database-driven web development.
Why did I choose this path?
I love running my own business because it allows me to do things my way. I will go the extra mile for my customers. I believe in the power of the Universe. I believe that if you do good, it comes back to you in one form or another. Life is about sharing love and kindness coming from our hearts. Never in my life have I realized the amazing potential that is hidden within me and within all of us like today! There have been times in my life when I wished that I could start over, but today I appreciate the wisdom that my life experiences have given me. My long term goal is to help others to find this amazing potential within themselves.
Why did I start this website?
My heart has always ached when I see people hurting this Earth, littering and throwing plastic bottles in the garbage. I got interested in preserving my health after I visited the first Health Show in Vancouver shortly after I moved to Canada in 1995. I enjoyed learning the perspective that we are largely responsible for our own health and well-being. The idea resonated with me – if I take care of my body, eat good food, exercise, I will have a better chance of staying healthy in the long run. I love running, dancing, yoga and eating nourishing food that I often buy directly from local farmers.
The fact that drinking from plastic bottles is not the best thing for our bodies or our Earth was not a surprise for me when the news surfaced in mainstream media in the spring of 2008. I had been carrying a glass bottle with me until I accidentally broke it at the Early Years Centre among crawling babies. Oh, did I ever feel bad! That was it for the glass bottles. Shortly thereafter, in January of 2007 I came across Klean Kanteen water bottles at the Guelph Organic Conference. Boy, was I intrigued! I stared at the bottles and the price tag for almost half an hour until I opened my wallet and purchased two of them. Adding an online store to my existing website (www.kwkids.com) to promote the proven Klean Kanteen water bottles was a natural step for me. My business has now evolved with this new website – FENIGO.COM. I hope to provide a one-stop solution for people wanting to lunch without waste. Just imagine how much less garbage there would be if every one of us had a lunch without waste every day!
